Thomas Tuchel has revealed his conviction that there is a “zero chance” that the Premier League will allow teams to make five substitutions, despite the selection problems caused by the recent Covid-19 outbreaks.
A number of matches have been postponed during Christmas due to players returning positive tests and even when the matches have passed, managers have generally had to deal with a reduced number.
Chelsea are no different and after his team defeated Aston Villa on the second day of Christmas, Tuchel revealed his desire for the rules to be changed.
“We only fill holes where we can fill them,” he told BBC Sport. “We have a Covid situation where for me five changes. We are in the middle of Covid where some teams get their matches postponed, others not.
“We have three changes, which is a major disadvantage in Europe.”
Asked if he thought the extra substitutes would be allowed, Tuchel replied: “Zero chance. Zero.
“We are the only league to play in the winter, which I love. But we do not protect the players because we are the only league in Europe that does not have five substitutions.
“And then we compete against them in the Champions League. So it’s a little frustrating.”
Tuchel’s selection difficulties were not helped by the fact that both N’Golo Kante and Thiago Silva picked up shots against Villa.

“‘N’Golo is very painful in the exact same place where he had his injury compared to Juventus,” he said.
“Thiago got rid of the hamstrings, hopefully he went out before there was an injury. From there we try to continue and find a new squad and a strong squad on Wednesday.”
However, that was not just bad news for Chelsea. Romelu Lukaku played the most minutes since returning from injury, scoring goals and winning a penalty after coming on at half-time.
“I told him to be very honest and tell me if he thinks he can play 45 minutes. He said yes and I said, okay, so try to play 45 minutes,” Tuchel added.
“There is no doubt that he is super important. Every player is super important but Romelu will be a key player, no one doubts that, but the last time he started for us was in October and not because of quality or because we have any doubts. that we are better without him starting. “
