Thomas Tuchel regrets the refereeing performance in Chelsea’s draw against Brighton

Thomas Tuchel has criticized David Coote’s refereeing performance after Chelsea’s disastrous draw against Brighton at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea had taken the lead via a Romelu Lukaku header in the first half, before a goal in stoppage time from Danny Welbeck earned a well-deserved point.

Speaking after the match, Tuchel teased the referee, the injury problems he is facing at the moment, and, yes, pretty much everything in between.

“Very frustrating and of course very disappointing,” he began. “We gave everything and we had enough chances to win the match.

“It was a very intense match, we had to make two more changes due to injuries, and the guys in the locker room are completely exhausted. It’s the same every match day now.

“We got a terrible decision from the referee, it was a clear penalty for 2-0 that was not even controlled. Everything is against us.”

Asked what went wrong for Chelsea in the second half, Tuchel replied: “We have two injuries, and we played with players who would normally be gone after 60 minutes. That’s the point – nothing else.”

Tuchel also gave a small update about Reece James after he suffered a seizure during the first half, noting that it was a hamstring injury.

The Chelsea boss continued to lament his side’s injury problems when asked to watch ahead of this weekend’s clash with Liverpool.

“You do not have to look forward to Liverpool,” he said. “We have to find players who are ready to play.

“We have no more backs, everyone is injured and players are coming back from Covid. We play, play, play and I will always protect my players.”
