Thomas Tuchel updates Chelsea’s squad

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel has given an update on the condition of his team as he continues to struggle with falls and injuries of Covid-19.

The Blues host Brighton on Wednesday night after recovering from a tough form with a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa on the second day.

Chelsea had failed to get their previous match – 0-0 draw against Wolves – canceled due to a number of positive cases of Covid-19 among the players and coaches. However, they did not reach the Premier League threshold for inaccessible players and the match continued.

With the matches continuing to come close and fast during the Christmas period and both coronavirus and injuries continuing to disrupt preparations, Tuchel admitted he is unsure of the condition of his team ahead of the Seagulls meeting at Stamford Bridge.

At his pre-match press conference, the German said: “We have infected people who have three vaccinations, we have infected players without vaccination, so we have everything.

“If you’re just talking about central midfield, let’s assume it might be N’Golo [Kanté] is out [of the Brighton game], maybe Ruben [Loftus-Cheek] is still out, so one [positive] test in central midfield is enough for the thing to collapse again, because then Kova plays again 90 minutes but from where, from nothing, and you risk injuries.

“This is what we’re doing at the moment. I can not see how we are outside the Covid threat at the moment because it does not feel that way.”

He added: “Ruben Loftus-Cheek is injured and suffering from Covid, so before the Brighton match I have to talk to the doctors and the physiotherapists and the fitness department, and then we will try to find solutions.”

N’Golo Kanté was forced out against Villa after aggravating the knee injury that has sidelined him since the end of November. However, he was able to train for Brighton, as did Kai Havertz, who returned a negative Covid-19 test after a period of isolation after not playing since 11 December.

Tuchel continued: “I can absolutely not understand zero percent why we are the only league playing through the winter and we are the only league with three substitutes in a period of strong Covid threats and heavy Covid situations.

“I’m very worried and I do not understand why we only have three substitutes. It’s absolutely pointless but it’s a situation so it’s worrying that we’re fighting and we have injuries and we have players who have suffered from Covid, and we do not have time. to build them up. “
