Crystal Palace’s trip to Tottenham on the second day of Christmas will continue despite a number of cases of Covid-19 among the Eagles’ squad and staff.

It was reported on Christmas Day that the match would be postponed. However, The Athletic reports that an official request for the Premier League was not made until early Sunday after a number of positive tests for the staff in the back room.

Palace players have gathered before the match to undergo further tests, but as confirmed by Tottenham Hotspur, the match will continue. The Daily Mail adds that the Premier League was not happy with the late request for a postponement.

The Eagles’ squad was told to stay at home instead of traveling to their team hotel on Christmas day after two of Patrick Vieira’s staff in the back room tested positive, which complemented the cases the manager reported on Friday.

In his press conference, Vieira said: “We hope we will be okay [to face Spurs] but when you look at the number of cases around, we’re starting to get worried.

“We have had a couple of cases in our football club in recent days. We are doing our best to prevent the situation but it is worrying because the development for the coming days we do not know how it will go.

“I’m not worried about the players’ well-being [frequency of] games during this period because it has been so for years. I’m worried about their welfare regarding COVID. Players who come back from the covid situation and ask them to play with too little training are a lot for them. “

Both Palace and Tottenham already have matches to catch up due to postponements. Spurs are three games behind after regaining their games with Burnley, Brighton and Leicester, while Palace could not face Watford in the last round of Premier League matches.
