The Wolves host Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, and both sides have taken an encouraging form in recent times.

Bruno Lage’s team comfortably sent Sheffield United 3-0 to sail on to the fourth round of the FA Cup last. That win followed the victory over Brighton, a draw against Chelsea and their first triumph at Manchester United in 40 years.

In eighth place in the Premier League table, Wolves face Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men who are fresh after a 4-1 defeat against Brentford in the middle of the week. It was after a 3-2 overtime win over Swansea in the FA Cup, before they tasted the victory over West Ham and a draw against Tottenham in the league.

Here is a 90 minute preview of this clash.

Teams will once again be without Romain Saiss and Willy Boly as the defenders represent Morocco and Ivory Coast respectively at the African Cup of Nations this month, potentially giving Leander Dendoncker a chance to impress against Southampton.

Elsewhere, hosts have to do without Hwang Hee-chan, Pedro Neto, Jonny and Yerson Mosquera as they all miss out on injury, while Adama Traore is unlikely to start as uncertainty over his future continues to grow.

The visitors also have some injured absences as Tino Livramento and Will Smallbone continue their recovery, while Fraser Forster should continue between the sticks in Alex McCarthy’s likely continued absence.

Meanwhile, Moussa Djenepo is also away at AFCON while Kyle Walker-Peters should be out of action through Covid-19.

The 71 meetings between these two sides have yielded a fairly even record over the decades. Since their first meeting in 1905, the Wolves have won 25 to Southampton’s 28 wins while there have been 18 draws.

However, the Wolves have just come over the match in recent years, winning three times in the last five meetings and winning the previous two – including the above 1-0 victory over St Mary’s earlier in the campaign.

With both sides heading into the tie at the back of very promising form series, there is little that separates them when they face Molineux.

With the likes of Joao Moutinho, Daniel Podence and Raul Jimenez stepping out on the field for the hosts and James Ward-Prowse behind a dynamic punch for the visitors, there are likely to be small moments of magic that can very easily determine the end result.

During the day, however, the two informed sides may only have to settle for part of the exchange.

Prediction: Wolves 1-1 Southampton
