Manchester United will take to the field under new interim manager Ralf Rangnick for the second time when they host the Young Boys in the final round of the Champions League group stage.

It was a remarkable tactical improvement under the revered German coach when United beat Crystal Palace in the Premier League this weekend and fans will be keen to see the team continue to develop on a positive path in the middle of the week.

United have already qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League by virtue of match day five away wins against Villarreal, and secured the top spot in the group. This dead rubber therefore gives Rangnick a good opportunity to see some of the other players at his disposal.

Young Boys are meanwhile out of action to advance in this competition but still have a chance to get into the Europa League if they are a shock and Atalanta are beaten at home by Villarreal in the group’s second match.

This is all you need to know about the game …

In addition to missing several players due to injury, Rangnick has confirmed that he intends to rotate new players to the starting eleven ahead of what is now an overloaded period of matches.

Raphael Varane and Edinson Cavani will probably stay until after the weekend, despite the fact that they have resumed light training after thigh and tendon problems, respectively. Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba are also unavailable, while Luke Shaw and Jesse Lingard are still hesitant.

Rangnick has confirmed that Dean Henderson and Donny van de Beek will start. There may also be opportunities at some point in the match for Anthony Elanga and Teden Mengi.

The Swiss champions are dealing with something of an injury crisis on their way into this one and are expected to miss at least eight players.

The list of absentees includes goalkeeper David von Ballmoos, midfielders Christian Fassnacht and Esteban Petignat, defenders Cedric Zesiger and Ulisses Garcia and forwards Jean-Pierre Nsame and Joel Monteiro.

Club captain Fabian Lustenberger has only started twice since returning from a long-term injury.

This week’s match is the fourth time that United and Young Boys meet, with fans at Old Trafford who do not need any reminder of the recent past a couple of months ago.

The 2-1 loss was one of several nails in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s coffin, as United withered under pressure when Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off in the first half in Bern.

The other two meetings came in the Champions League group stage 2018/19. Paul Pogba scored two goals in a 3-0 victory in Switzerland in the first of these, before a late winner from Marouane Fellaini secured Jose Mourinhos United a 1-0 victory in the reverse match at Old Trafford.

United have clearly responded well to Rangnick’s instructions since taking over at the end of last week. Even with a rotated line-up, the sudden tactical upswing, combined with the depth of quality in the squad, and Young Boys’ injury problems, should lead to a home victory.

Prediction: Man Utd 2-0 Young Boys
