Twitter reacts when Man Utd secures the Champions League development

2

Well well well. It was not beautiful but Manchester United have started the era after Ole at a high level, with caretaker Michael Carrick behind a 2-0 Champions League victory over Villarreal to ensure they advance to the knockout stage.

Before a ball was even kicked on Tuesday night, Carrick already made headlines.

When the two line-ups came out, it was clear that the interim manager had made several big calls, where Bruno Fernandes released to the bench the biggest of them.

It was also a surprising start for Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial, while Jadon Sancho’s inclusion was not exactly expected either.

Fernandes should have been fired weeks ago. That conversation is undermined by the fact that Wan-Bissaka and Maguire get passports but still a big conversation. The selection of the match is questionable to say the least. Van de Beek got started. Doubts many thought he would do it at Fernande’s expense. #mufc

It took us longer than usual to get started in Spain, thanks to the judge Dr. Felix Brych apparently had to change the battery on his headphone.

Yes, for real.

Bizarre scenes here in Villarreal where the kick-off between Villarreal and Manchester United has been delayed because referee Felix Brych seems to have problems with his earpiece. The German official has just disappeared down the tunnel.

Felix Brych referees every Champions League match and no one can say anything else to me

Awaiting the start of Villarreal-Man Utd, but referee Dr. Felix Brych has problems with the batteries for the headset system.

Not the typical start to a #UCL night

– Matt Digby (@DigbyMatt) November 23, 2021

Was the first half worth the wait? No, not really.

United started badly with Villarreal looking more likely to score in the first 20 minutes. At this point, it was obvious that the players of Red Devils lowered the tempo and became more defensively oriented. Cristiano Ronaldo struck a 30 meter free kick home 26 minutes into the match.

The result? Straight into the wall.

Oh dear. It summed up the opening 45 minutes.

Ronaldo’s free kick technique no longer works.

Villarreal came out strong in the second half – or rather United came out weak.

The yellow submarine was close to breaking the deadlock just before the hour mark, when Manuel Trigueros had a hard effort that was kept away by David de Gea.

It was not the first time the Spaniard came to the rescue of his side, which social media was quick to point out.

David de Gea tonight !!! pic.twitter.com/kkZg2J82HK

– ?? ¹⁷ (@ftblAyara) 23 November 2021

The home team had to apologize for their missed opportunities when Cristiano Ronaldo, as he has done so many times already this season, appeared to save the team’s skin.

Ronaldo takes advantage of a defensive lapse from Villarreal and gently lifts the ball over Gerónimo Rulli before shaking the ground with an almighty SSSSSSSSSSIUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU.

? Fantastic pressing game from Fred & a great finish from Ronaldo gives #mufc the lead!

– UtdDistrict (@UtdDistrict) 23 November 2021

Another pundit suggested that Ronaldo is a problem on #mufc. It’s the guy whose goals are responsible for their 10 Champions League points at the moment, whose winner at Spurs kept Solskjaer at work a little longer and whose ruthlessness prevented disaster against Newcastle. Big problem?

– Samuel Luckhurst (@samuelluckhurst) November 23, 2021

His finish was emphatic and he looked happy to score as well, but not as happy as some people on Twitter.
