USMNT to play World Cup qualifiers in Columbus and Minnesota

It looks like the USMNT will continue its path to the 2022 FIFA World Cup through the US Midwest after announcing Columbus, Ohio and St. Louis. Paul, Minnesota as arenas for the next two qualifiers.

The first match starts on January 27 against El Salvador at Field, home of the Major League Soccer’s Columbus Crew. The US men’s national team will then meet Honduras on February 2 at Allianz Field, the stadium in Minnesota United.

“As we have seen throughout the qualifying process so far, fantastic arenas and great atmosphere provide a great advantage for our team,” said United States coach Gregg Berhalter as part of Wednesday’s announcement of venue.

“We have had fantastic experiences in Columbus and the Twin Cities and look forward to continuing our World Cup qualifying campaign in front of our fans.”

Columbus became the national team’s unofficial home, having played at least one qualifying match there during every World Cup cycle since 2002. The team has a record of 8-2-1 in these matches in total. Berhalter is no stranger to this stadium either, having coached the Columbus Crew for five years before becoming USMNT manager.

Between the two home games, USMNT will travel to Canada on January 30 as part of Octagon’s three-match window.

To prepare for the qualifying period in January / February, the US side will hold a training camp in Carson, California on December 5-18, and face Bosnia and Herzegovina on the 18th in an international friendly.

The United States is in second place on the Concacaf table after beating North American rivals Mexico to climb the table. The American side now has a record of 4-3-1 with 15 points in eight games.

While they have a convenient location, USMNT has no room for error as Mexico and Panama are only one point behind. The top three teams qualify directly for the World Cup, while fourth place leads to a play-off between federations.

The place for the last home qualifier – against Panama on March 27 – has not yet been decided.
