The US women’s national team travels to Australia this month to participate in a series of two matches against the 2023 World Cup hosts.

The Matildas will host USWNT for the first time in 21 years at Stadium Australia in Sydney on November 27 and then in Newcastle on November 30, the Football Association confirmed on Thursday.

“This is an important and final opportunity to see the players against an extremely high quality nation before we select the final squad for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup,” said Australia head coach Tony Gustavsson.

“Meeting the American women’s national team at home will mark the sixth unique opponent in the top 10 that this team would have faced in 2021.

“With each match, we continue to get a better day as a team, while providing invaluable experience to the younger players on the team.”

The two teams have a long-standing rivalry, having last met during the Olympics in Tokyo in the battle for the bronze medal, where the Americans took the victory.

“This trip and these matches will be fantastic tests and learning opportunities,” said US head coach Vlatko Andonovski.

“Getting to go to one of the countries hosting the next Women’s World Cup and having to deal with travel and meet one of the best teams in the world is a great way to end the year.”

Australia’s national team coach Tony Gustavsson is no stranger to USWNT after acting as assistant coach from 2012 until the team’s 2019 World Cup win in France.

This friendly comes after USWNT hosted South Korea for two matches in October in what was considered Carli Lloyd’s farewell tour.
