Victor Wanyama reveals the desire to return to Celtic

CF Montreal midfielder Victor Wanyama has admitted that he still wants to return and give it “one last chance” at Celtic.

The Kenyan midfielder played 91 times for Hoops in all competitions between 2011 and 2013, scoring 13 goals and winning three trophies before heading to Southampton.

After three seasons on the south coast and another three and a half years at Tottenham Hotspur, Wanayama joined the MLS team Montreal 2020. He has since become a key player for the Canadian club, ranked second among his teammates for tackles (53) and recoveries (53). 215) only this season, while he has also scored two goals.

But Wanyama still feels Parkhead’s attraction and says he wants to return there to play one day.

“I had a contract at Tottenham and they were very difficult to let me go, the requirements were very tough,” he told Football Scotland. “Celtic was a club I would love to play for again and again. It’s more than a club. I enjoyed my time there.

“I honestly want to come back and give it one last chance because I love the club, the people there, the fans, just about everything there was fantastic. They give the players everything to go on the pitch and perform. Everything was just great.”

Wanyama’s failure to return to Celtic was not because he did not want to try. The 30-year-old revealed that the Glasgow giants made an attempt to recruit him again and that he even talked to the then manager Neil Lennon, but the finances eventually got in the way.

“There was a lending strategy but I do not know what happened,” he continued. “I did not follow it up that much. I talked to Neil too and he told me ‘it’s difficult with the requirements’ and at that time they did not have the money to make it happen. But that’s what it is. Like me says, I still love that club, it’s in my heart. ”

Right now, Wanyama will focus on helping Montreal qualify for the MLS Cup playoffs, with the Canadian side one point and a place outside the top seven with a single game left of the regular season.

That match is at home against Orlando City, with a victory in Montreal that is big enough to jump over the Lions in the table.
