Villarreal vs Man Utd are categorized as “high risk” for violence

Manchester United’s visit to Villarreal in the Champions League has been declared a “high risk” for supporter violence.

The match is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, November 23 and it is an important one for the Red Devils. The two teams are currently at the top of Group F with seven points and a victory would mean that United take a big step towards qualifying for the knockout stage.

Tensions will therefore be high at the stadium and the Spanish authorities will take extra precautions to ensure that there are no problems with the crowd.

The country’s anti-violence commission has categorized the match as a higher risk, which confirms their decision in a statement on Tuesday.

“The State Commission against Violence, Racism, Xenophobia and Intolerance in Sport has declared the Champions League match between Villarreal and Manchester United on November 23 as a high risk,” it said.

As a result, security will be strengthened around the stadium at the same time as there will be an increased police presence. The game is sold out, which means that Villarreal’s Estadio de la Cerámica with 23,500 capacity will be filled to the brim – 2,000 tickets have been awarded to away fans.

When the teams met in the Europa League final in 2021, United supporters became the target when they drank in a bar in the center of Gdansk, Poland. However, eyewitness reports at the time blamed this on locally based hooligans, not Villarreal fans.

In the reverse match of the season’s group game in the Champions League, United secured a 2-1 victory – but it was far from a convincing achievement.

They ended up shortly after the break thanks to a Paco Alcacer attack and demanded an Alex Telles goal and a last-second winner from Cristiano Ronaldo to save their skins. Under pressure boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will hope for a more comfortable evening on this occasion.
