Who will make it to the playoffs?

This is it. Do it or die. Decision day is upon us in MLS.

Whether you’re fighting for a place in the playoffs, want to top the conference or are looking for a Golden Boot tribute, this is your last chance to dance. Everything is at stake this Sunday. Months of hard work, blood, sweat and tears are about to either come true or go up in smoke.

So, what’s at stake for the biggest day in the regular season? Here’s everything you need to know …

Eastern Conference

There are only three playoff spots left in the East, with no less than six teams fighting for them. Atlanta United (48 points), Orlando City (48 points) and the New York Red Bulls (47 points) are currently leading, but CF Montréal (46 points), DC United (44 points) and Columbus (44 points) are all in hot pursuit .

Either one of Atlanta United and the Red Bulls could mathematically have taken a playoff spot in New Jersey on Wednesday but only managed a 0-0 draw, which means that both need Decision Day results to be completely sure. That same night, CF Montreal beat Houston Dynamo 2-0 to keep in touch with the top seven.

Atlanta United has the easiest task of all on paper, and travels to bottom team FC Cincinnati on Sunday. Montreal host Orlando City with a victory big enough to skip the Lions to the playoffs. Whether Orlando manages to stay in the top seven in defeat or not depends on the Red Bulls’ ability to take at least one point away in Nashville SC. At the same time, DC United and Columbus Crew must beat Toronto FC and Chicago Fire, respectively, and get results elsewhere.

Further up the standings, Nashville and Philadelphia are vying for second place, while the NYCFC is looking to stay in fourth place.

Western Conference

Even though it is not quite as narrow, it is still in the air in the west as well. The quintet Minnesota United (48 points), Vancouver Whitecaps (48 points), LA Galaxy (47 points), Real Salt Lake (45 points) and LAFC (45 points) all compete for the last three places after the season.

MNUFC and ‘Caps only need a draw on Sunday and a place in the playoffs is theirs. But Minnesota is playing against LA Galaxy, who will be looking for a win to keep RSL and LAFC out from under them. The latter two teams both need three points and results elsewhere to be able to sneak into the playoffs.

Although the western world’s playoff race is a much clearer picture, the race to top the conference is wide open. The Seattle Sounders (59 points), Sporting KC (58 points) and Colorado Rapids (58 points) can all still steal first place and are separated by just a single point. SKC hosts RSL, Sounders travel to Vancouver and Rapids welcome LAFC. With all three opponents chasing a place after the season, there will be no easy rides to the top of the west.

Taty Castellano’s position against Inter Miami last week finally lifted the Argentine to the top of the Golden Boot with 18 goals after leading the league in xG for a while. However, the title is anything but safe.

Raul Ruidiaz and longtime leader Ola Kamara take on the challenge with 17 goals each, while Adam Buksa and Daniel Salloi are both back in 16. There are also a host of terrifying attacking talents on 15 goals, but that would take a biblical turn. to swing things in their path.
