Wilfried Nancy praises CF Montreal for winning the Canadian Championship

CF Montreal coach Wilfried Nancy believes his team’s defeat on Decision Day against Orlando City inspired their 1-0 Canadian Championship final victory over Toronto FC.

An incident in the 72nd minute by Romell Quioto was enough to determine Sunday’s spectacular goal, which delivered silver and a return to the Concacaf Champions League for Montreal during the process. That they did it against Canadian Classique rivals Toronto will only make the success taste so much sweeter.

The atmosphere at Saputo Stadium was much more jubilant than after the final whistle of their 2-0 loss to Orlando on the final day of the MLS regular season two weeks ago – a result that meant they missed the MLS Cup playoffs.

“The players deserved to get to the playoffs,” Nancy said of their Decision Day collapse. “We were close but a bit far because we did not handle the match moment well [against Orlando] and we must learn about that. Hopefully next year will be better. “

But Nancy believes that “failure” was the key to Sunday’s success, and taught her side some valuable lessons in game management and adversity management.

“We need failures like this to improve,” he said (via MLSsoccer.com). “I’m pretty sure we won this game because we also had the opportunity to play a game two weeks ago against Orlando and that’s why we handled the game a little better.”

The cup remains at home.

Sunday’s cup final success marked the end of what Nancy thinks was a positive first season as Montreal’s head coach. The Frenchman was especially “proud” of how his side stuck to its principles and style of play in 2021, even as the window to the playoffs continued to shrink.

“I’m really, really proud because I was trying to instill a culture of growth but also with a desire to win,” Nancy added. “I know it’s a process but today I’m really happy we won and we played the way I want to see my team play.”
