Winner of PFA Vertu Motors League One Fans’ Player of the Month

Ipswich Town forward James Norwood has been voted the PFA Vertu Motors League One fans’ player in December.

Norwood scored three goals in three games during the month – a remarkable turnaround given that he had barely been with this season.

The striker was handed over by former Ipswich boss Paul Cook before leaving in early December and was replaced by Kieran McKenna. The arrival of the former Man Utd coach foreshadowed Norwood’s reintroduction to the first team.

Norwood’s form was outstanding when he scored in three major games in a row for the Tractor Boys – including his first start of the season.

His first blow was a late decisive equalizer from the bench in the 1-1 draw against Wigan, and he followed it up with the premiere in the home clash against the Sunderland promotion – a match that also ended 1-1.

Norwood ended the year with the match’s only goal in the 1-0 win over high-flying Wycombe at Portman Road.

McKenna was clearly pleased with Norwood’s form and apparently he was not the only one impressed as he also caught the attention of League One fans. The 31-year-old received almost 30% of the votes with 2,266, but it was a close competition when he finished with less than 200 votes before Sunderland’s well-known Ross Stewart.

In fact, Norwood and Stewart dominated when they took more than 50% of the vote, which put Ireland’s international goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu – who is enjoying a brilliant campaign in Portsmouth on loan from Manchester City – in third place after only receiving 15% with 1,156 votes.

Shewsbury’s Nigerian ace Daniel Udoh came fourth after receiving just over 1,000 votes. Bazunus’ teammate Connor Ogilvie came in fifth place with Oxford’s Matty Taylor in sixth place after both received just over 8% of the votes cast.
