Forest Green Rovers Mathew Stevens has been named PFA Vertu Motors League Two Fans Player of the Month in December.
Forest Green’s dominance of League Two continues, so it’s not surprising that one of their players has won the award for the third time in the fourth month.
Jamille Matt claimed the prize twice, but now his attacking colleague Stevens has taken the honor – even though it was a very close thing.
Stevens and Forest Green only played two games in December, but that did not stop him from reaching the goal.
The striker scored a goal and assist when FGR beat Harrogate Town 4-1 on the road before putting up a stand and putting on another in the extraordinary 5-5 result against Oldham Athletic.
Over 7,000 votes were cast for the League Two award, but fewer than 500 separated them in the top four.
Stevens took the honor with 1,517 votes – just over 21% of the total – which was just over 100 more than second-placed Myles Hippolyte from Scunthorpe United, who in turn was less than 100 more than Bristol Rovers forward Aaron Collins.
Fourth place Peter Clarke from Tranmere actually also received more than 1,000 votes. Mansfield Town left-back Stephen McLaughlin came in fifth with 849 votes – just one vote ahead of Rochdale’s Jake Beesley, who has since secured a move to Championship Blackpool.
