October 9, 2021 marked the fortieth anniversary of the abolition of the loss of life penalty in France. To mark the event, President Emmanuel Macron introduced the group of a “high-level meeting” on the United Nations from early 2022. The goal of the assembly? To “convince” the leaders of nations which nonetheless use the loss of life penalty of “the urgency of abolishing it”. Robert Badinter, who was Minister of Justice 40 years in the past when the loss of life penalty was abolished, continues to battle for the common abolition of the loss of life penalty.
