French socialist Hidalgo calls for left-wing primary to nominate presidential candidate

The choice of the French Socialist Party to run for president on Wednesday called on left-wing parties to rally to a single candidate in the poll next April, which will be chosen via a primary election.

Anne Hidalgo, who is also mayor of Paris, said that if the left does not unite, it “will be impossible to continue to exist in our country”.

“We have no more time to waste,” she added in an interview with broadcaster TF1, evoking the need to give greater political visibility to subjects such as climate protection and public education. .

According to opinion polls, none of the three left-wing presidential candidates would qualify for a second round with the current president and favorite Emmanuel Macron, a centrist.

Hidalgo collects around 5% of the vote, behind Greens candidate Yannick Jadot and Jean-Luc Melenchon from the far left who are both in the high single-digit percentage.

None of the trio has previously indicated whether they would be willing to withdraw from the race to support a better-placed leftist candidate.

Earlier on Wednesday, former Minister of Economy and Industry Arnaud Montebourg – a socialist like Hidalgo who campaigned for the presidency on an independent ticket – said he would be ready to step down and rally to a common left-wing candidate.

The Socialists of France, the most powerful party in the country until 2017, when they controlled both houses of parliament as well as the presidency, were marginalized following Macron’s election, which changed the landscape country policy.
