Benjamin Brière, a French tourist imprisoned in Iran for espionage since the spring of 2020, has started a hunger strike, his lawyer and sister said in a statement on Monday.
French authorities remain in close contact with Brière, visiting him on December 21 and contacting him on Monday, a spokesperson for the French foreign ministry said.
Brière has been detained since May 2020, when he was arrested after piloting a helicam – a mini remote-controlled helicopter – in the desert near the Turkmenistan-Iran border, and charged with espionage and propaganda against the Islamic Republic.

“The feeling of abandonment – and distress – led Benjamin Brière to start a hunger strike in order to alert the Iranian and French authorities to the absurdity of his detention”, declared his sister Blandine Brière and the lawyer Philippe Valent in a press release sent by email.
