Tesla recalls nearly 500,000 cars over crash risk issue

Tesla is recalling nearly 500,000 electric vehicles over trunk issues that increase the risk of an accident, according to a US auto safety regulator.

Elon Musk’s electric automobile company has undertaken two separate recalls to address issues that may disable the rear view camera or cause the hood to open unexpectedly. The company will notify the owners and fix the problem free of charge.

Tesla regulators notified on December 21 and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) officially acknowledged the problem on Wednesday.

The largest recall involves more than 355,000 Model 3 vehicles in which repeatedly opening and closing the trunk can damage a backup camera cable.

“The unavailability of the rear view camera display may affect the driver’s rear view and increase the risk of a collision,” according to an NHTSA safety recall report.

Tesla estimated that only one percent of the recalled Model 3 vehicles contain the problem, and the company is unaware of any accidents or injuries, NHTSA said.

The other recall involves nearly 120,000 Model S vehicles in which there was a problem with the front trunk lid latch assembly. An estimated 14 percent of recalled vehicles have the problem.

“If the primary latch is inadvertently released and the secondary latch is not engaged, the trunk can open without warning and obstruct the driver’s view, increasing the risk of an accident,” NHTSA said.

Tesla is not aware of any accidents or injuries due to the issue, according to the report.

The company is expected to send letters to owners on February 18 and will reimburse those who have already paid to fix the issue.
